here's a side project i'm working on the side.

This is a collaboration in which i'm teaming up with Heather Brammeier, professor of painting at Bradley.

the visual resources are the same pool of imagery we both dip from from, but the approach we take is completely diferent.

Conceptual Content:

The Painting Professor at Bradley University, Heather Brammeier, has often worked on collaborations with her graduates students who wither take a drawing and/or painting course with her.

Since I've taken painting, drawing, and color theory with her, she thought collaborating with me would be a great idea!

When compared to each other, our work appear to be on the opposite sides of the visual spectrum. Her work is abstract color compositions focusing more on creating an illusion of depth based on color interactions. Although the flat curvilinear forms she draws and paints come off as geometric initially, they actually base the beginnings in the movements of plant life and ocean life as they waft effortlessly in the currents and the waves.

Where as the my work is a more literal depiction of oceanic and other aquatic critter, I still look to how those organism exist in their water environment. The conceptual idea for why My obsession with the dark values of Mezzotint can't set my work farther apart form Heather's colorful paintings then is possible. But i've grown to appreciate color (no i love color) and even my adventures into color fall on a very different plane.

Some how, the origins that birthed these ideas have come merged and created this amalgamation of two different artists.

How We Do:

the basis of this collaboration is to be completely reactive to what you see on the paper. You manipulate the image due to your instincts and gut feelings while keeping in line with your own style/imagery.

above all else, WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO OBSESS OVER IT!

History of the piece:

This started as an ink wash drawing i had started back last semester. after agreeing to collaborate, I passed the piece on to Heather who worked a little before giving it back. I work on it and passed it back...and so on and so forth.

The best part about the collaboration is the history of marks and images layered on there has helped build and created a sophisitcated world/environment that reflects the aquatic qualities Heather and I are visually attracted to.

I cannot wait to see just how much this invented environment evolves and changes before we both decided the piece is gone.

The possibility of continuous growth within the image is exciting and quite breathtaking, due to the fact that it could continue to change and develop for another day or even years to come.

so teaching drawing this semester, i had a group of great students who wanted to work with color. and as enthusiastic as they are, i offered the challenge of working with wet media. actually, i told them they would work with water color.

as I've grown quite fond of gouache, i thought not only can i practice my color theory in the classroom setting, but also i would improve in my used of the gouache.

I started the class with a Color Inventory in which i handed each student a different piece of decorative paper. They had to inventory each color they saw and paint the amount of each color...(i'll post an example tomorrow) and then create a flat color composition using those colors, then finally folding a piece of paper either into origami or an abstract 3-D object.

Using the colors they identified and mixed from the their inventory they had to paint the paper structure.

So i was surprised that none of them made the most basic paper boat fold. Even more surprised, when i asked about it and they had no clue what i was talking about. I even made one and they still had no idea what i was talking about. *I felt very distant from their generation... and now i feel really old*

any who, i make it a point to do the assignments i give my students, with them. So I completed an inventory, a flat color composition, and the 3D paper structure painting. It was a lot of fun and so i started thinking about the paper boat.

I remembered the photograph that adrienne had given me for helping frame her show. and I was hit in the face with the perfect metaphor and image for my work! The paper boat!

A boat is a mode of transportation that allows people, objects, animals and other stuff to traverse over open water. But the paper boat may be representation of a real boat but it can not complete the voyage of it's sturdier cousins.

I remembered when i was little i really did think that if i made a bunch of paper boats i could float across the ocean.. and then BAM! NEW work!!!!

it's taped to the wall outside of printmaking, and i started to add sunken paper boats. hopefully it will become a site of multiple shrip wrecks.

It's sad to think that for myself that the paper boat isn't capable of taking me Palau, but i also associate it with the many Palauans that leave the Islands in search of making a new life in America or else where but never seem to be able to make back home. I'm just like them...making many paper boats in hopes of returning, only to have them sink part way across the ocean.

I realize I haven't posted on here in a

ges. Jerry is being a great example and getting things done and actually using our blog.

I have been showing quite a bit around Nashville this year. They have been smaller group shows with some friends but it has been very nice to have deadlines again. Other than that I have been looking forward to graduate school, trying to make future decisions, have a full time job and make artwork.

Heres a photo of my bulletin board in my studio. The two animals in the top right corner are what I have been working on this morning. I am planning on cutting these sort of animal puppets out in LARGE multiples and hanging them all together in a group with framed artwork possibly? They are really just something I had been thinking about how to construct alot lately and figured it was time to try it out.

Been thinking about bears alot lately too. Not sure why.

Has anyone else experienced a tremendous rise in drama in and around their art making since leaving Murray?

I don't know how much more I can take of the emotional roller coaster ride some of the students here are dragging me through.

What I'm more curious is , why am I dragged into it, when those problems are not even mine.

I mean, c'mon kids. Grow up and take care of your situation. I can't hold your hand and make it all better.

Dear Junior Art Major,

It's not my responsibility to inform you of all the art receptions that occur in the department. You are a JUNIOR ART MAJOR! You should know when a show reception is happening, and who the artist is and when they give their talk. YOU ARE A JUNIOR ART MAJOR! That means this is the Sixth Semester YOU HAVE BEEN A STUDENT OF THE ART DEPARTMENT! ARRGHHHH!

You expect everyone to hand you praise, but you trash any you get. You say you want to get better and yet you put very little effort in that goal. You give up before you even try. You are complacent in where you're at, and have no initiative to reach your potential.

I'm wiping my hands clean. You're on your own. I have my own work, and my own troubles to worry about.

While at Barnes and Noble, I pick up this book, Drawing From Life: The Journal As Art. It just a book that explores the sketchbook of several artists. The amount of thought within the pages of their submission is completely inspiring. Technical prowess is not an issue as the thinking process is what is point of this collection.

Google: Drawing From Life: The Journal As Art - project compiled by Jennifer New. Good purchase.

The second purchase was discovered by my sister, almost at the same time I found the previous book. This one, "1000 Artist Journal Pages" which is similar in concept to Jennifer New's book. This is just a collection of many artists contributions. Equally as beautiful.

So in honor of the sketchbook exchange project, buy/borrow/check out these books.

I have been busy for a while and have a few things to share so bear with me.

Firstly, I got two great books today with a giftcard I got for Christmas.

An Illustrated Life by Danny Gregory

(tagline states: "drawing inspiration from the private sketchbooks of artists, illustrators, and designers")

You can watch a video about it here.

Its pretty cool, featuring everyone from James Jean to Stefan Sagmeister. Each artist speaks about their way of journaling their thoughts and what brand sketchbooks they use/what pen brands/what watercolors/etc. Very inspirational.

AND

Hand Job: A Catalog of Type by Michael Perry

Showcases a gajillion (yes a gajillion) examples of hand rendered type. Actually alot of Sagmeister Inc. work in there too. . .of course. Visual Overload.

These should all be quite handy since a few of us are working on a neato sketchbook project and I'm working on drawing/collages myself.

Speaking of, here are a couple images of things I have been haphazardly working on. I told Ann I would put them up. I feel like I am WILLING new work to come out of me, albeit slowly.

I don't what it is about this semester but, i feel like my life just doubled in speed and i was completely caught off guard.

I feel like the boat i'm riding suddenly burst into speed, spilling me in the ocean, and I'm just treading water watching the boat leave me behind.

I decided last night that I need to start being serious about my grad school research. Until now I have flirted with the idea, gotten lots of pretty packets in the mail, but haven't made any serious commitment about looking at the pros and cons of each program.

Since I know a few people are here are gradschool experienced, any suggestions about how I should go about making decisions would be extremely helpful.

I think I want my grad degree to be in Printmaking/Book Arts/Papermaking but I want a school that has a working letterpress area. I'm also interested in Museum Studies....so....I need to make up my mind and.or figure out how to do ALL of that at once. If I'm going back to school, I'm definitely planning on making it worth it. (obviously)

So it's the final night of MAPC 2008: Fargo and I must say that it was by far the smallest conference I've been too, but I had a blast never-the-last. I have met so many people and particularly other students. The Herron School of Art kids are pretty awesome.

If the economy crunch is affecting your art collecting or home decorating, well this is the answer to your problems! Tag art gallery’s Jerry Dale McFadden and Isle of Printing’s Bryce McCloud have put together another print and poster art extravaganza coming up at the end of August for one weekend only. The show will feature some of the hottest printmakers from around the country together under one roof. The artwork will be exhibited at Nashville’s only non-profit art center, Ruby Green. A portion of sales from the show will benefit Ruby Green.

This is the show for folks looking for unique and affordable artwork for their home, dorm room, office or wherever. There will be lots of gig posters/rock posters as well as art prints of all kinds, whether made from screenprinting, letterpress or stenciled artwork. Average prices range between $20 to $40. Just in time for back-to-school!

Some of the fine printmakers that will be featured include Nashville’s own Bryce McCloud of Isle of Printing. McCloud, who has helped pull similar shows together with TAG, is a renowned guru of printmaking here and around the world. McCloud apprenticed at Hatch Show Print years ago before venturing out on his own and continues in the tradition of vintage letterpress, woodcut and linocut prints. McCloud was featured in Chronicle Books’ “The Art of Modern Rock” along with some of the other artists that will be featured in this exhibit.

Other artists exhibiting include Lesley Patterson-Marx, Emily Leonard, Laura Baisden, Dan Grzeca, Dirk Fowler of f2design, Allison Glancey of Strawberryluna, Burlesque of North America, Mike Davis and Sasha Barr just to name a few.

Though TAG art gallery no longer has an actual gallery space, this is the first installment and example of Jerry Dale McFadden’s plan to continue curating interesting art shows in the Nashville area as well as around the country. Other upcoming events include an exhibit of new work by New York artist Lori Field along with Nashville favorite Anna Jaap, to be held at Estel Gallery, September 6th – October 4th. Also, McFadden has arranged a show of new paintings by Samuel Dunson to be held in October at the Vanderbilt Divinity School, Oct. 9th through Nov. 7th.

My friend and roommate from college is getting married in January and asked me to design her wedding invitations and programs. Having access to Hatch Show in this case turns out to be totally invaluable. Who doesn't want hand printed wedding invitations!?

It will eventually be trifold, with a perforated/tear-off rsvp postcard. Printed with the florishes in a split fountain bright blue/lightblue and all the type in black. Heres some shots of the rough mockup:

(YES, I am aware of the typos, if you know Betsy...I have no idea who really reads this blog. There weren't any more "a's" in the typeface I needed so I had to temporarily substitute "e's" instead so I could get the spacing right.)

I was given quite a surprise ladies and gents. Today, I was contacted by a young Palauan in the arts. My parents somehow know her parents, but that's not really surprising. Palauans seem to know everyone who is somewhat of Palauan decent.

The surprise is far more exciting. There are more Palauans in the world of art! I'm so excited, that I don't have to think I'm the only one anymore. This is big news!

To top it off, I was asked to provide a bio, so me and my work can be used in a class presentation! I feel so professional! It's exciting, but also weird. I've been been used in a presentation before.

I've been making work again. Granted its really silly work, but its work none-the-less. I feel like its totally different from my work in undergrad as far as mood and intention goes but some of the imagery is the same. I'm drawing much more than normal.

Also, currently making art for the Tomato Art Festival Show that is held in East Nashville on August 9th. I'll be posting those as soon as they are finished. I could not be more glad to have a deadline again.

Another announcement: Jerry Phillips, our friend Alex Griendling, and I are collaborating on a sort of traveling sketchbook project that we created. The theme is "Animal, Vegetable, Mineral" I'm sure we'll be periodically posting things about that as well.

As you may have guessed I have finished my first year of graduate school. Instead of boring you with the details, I'll let you glimpse a tad into my next semester. Imagine a classroom with kids , ready to tackle a blank page and create.

I was asked two days ago, if I would teach a beginning drawing class Monday and Wednesday nights in the Fall! My first real class!!! I'm so excited.

Also, crazy peeps, me and the Robyn are headed to South Dakota this July....who's going to be there?

First Year of Grad School...over?

In four days, I will take part in the end of the semester graduate critiques.

This crit is something rather special. It's officially called, "The Advancement to Candidacy" crit, which all Murray Kids can relate to. Back in Murray, we called it "Mid-degree Review."

Basically, I'll show my work and talk about where I think it's heading and how the changes in imagery and idea are related to this direction. They will then decide whether or not I can continue with the program.

I sat down with Nathan today, and we both had the same reflections about grad school at Bradley. Murray treated the BFA students like Graduate Students. So we're actually not having trouble at Bradley, that's not including the working at developin concepts and experimenting with new processes and such. you get the deal.

I'm not really concerned with the semester ending...I'm really shocked that I'm already through 1/3 of my Graduate School Career...that's incredible.

It's going to be in the beginning of October....

It's another gathering of printmakers and I must say I'm really excited about it.

I've never been to North Dakota, let alone Fargo.

I have never seen the movie Fargo (but this will be remedied soon).

But I'm most excited about being around a bunch of Printmakers when I turn 26.

That's right folks, Jerry turns 26 during the MAPC festivities!!! Hope you all can be there! I'm going to go eat some sushi on the night of Oct. 3!

Hey Friends!

LMU's on spring break, which means I am having an intense, uninterupted week of productivity....both making work and tending to computer-business like my Blog, and my Etsy shop. It feels springy in LA. One would think there wouldn't be a perceivable change in weather, but there totally is.

Also working on my plan to attend Southern Graphics Council at the end of the month. I can't wait.

So here's some new work. The etching was the first of the semester. I'm still tweaking it , so it is not editioned but I'm really excited about this little guy. It still has a basis in the jellyfish forms I love, but I feel it is growing beyond just representing the animal. There was a feeling of change I kept experiencing when I was working on this. This little guy is precious.

The collograph is some new technique Oscar has shown me. It works very similarly to mezzotint, but eliminates the tedious preparation of the plate (also it is way cheaper to make). I'm growing quite fond of this acquired knowledge and have complete a large one I just proofed last night. I'll scan that and upload it in a little bit.

I am finally posting some sketches of things I've been working on lately. Birds again, movement, multiple views of the same thing...been journaling alot to figure out why certain images keep coming back to me.

All these have been separated and are currently shot in silkscreens and waiting on me to use them.

It was brought to my attention today that if you google: "Hatch Show Print Adrienne Miller" that images of me working this summer come up.

For about a week or two in July (i think) a lovely group of people from the Smithsonian came to Hatch to take photos in the shop and to record interviews for a future podcast. They are putting together a traveling exhibition to showcase both old and new Hatch prints and celebrate the history of the shop.

Me assembling the Damien Rice poster for the show at the Ryman in August. Working on the woodblock background for both of the Damien posters and the Murray State concert poster is next to it. Mr. Brad Vetter is there working too. You should google his name also. He's a great friend, taught me the ways of letterpress, and way cooler than I will ever be. Plus he makes some kickass posters.
(I just got the John Prine one he made and it makes me want to drool.)

Anyways, life in Nashville has been good lately. I took advantage of my "best intern ever" status from Hatch and designed some unconventional Christmas cards there. Finished them tonight (edition of 50) and am in the process of writing/addressing them at the moment so they will be in the mail soon. I have a few silkscreens drying and ready for exposure, sketches waiting to be scanned, etc etc. Its nice to finally be working for myself again after a long overdue break.

Re-thinking, Re-doing, Re-working. . .

As it turns out, graduating from college means you start reinventing yourself. I think Jerry and Ann can probably agree with me on this.

Once you have your BFA show, its as if that body of work, that thought process is over. As much as you try and go back and tie off loose ends, it doesn't seem to work. Everything starts changing pretty rapidly with you just trying to catch up and make art that reflects what is going on.

Yet, I know I am in a place that is beautiful and new and strange all at the same time. I don't have anyone to make me make anything (One reason we started this blog.) Still I know my life doesn't feel right without using my ability to create. I get to start over knowing I've already succeeded and I have other great artists to support me. (thank you peers, students, teachers, professionals, etc.) That, my blog readers, is really wonderful and something to take advantage of.

So, here is our blog as alumni of Murray State's Art Dept.
I am really excited to see how things progress.
